The fire that claimed the life of Krystle Chung, whose charred remains were found in her bedroom on January 14 was caused by a defective electrical fan in her room.
This was disclosed by Fire Chief Marlon Gentle.
Chung, 26, of Lot 8 Little Diamond Public Road perished in the fire after she was trapped in her room. Other family members were able to escape. A Guyana Police Force report stated that the fire started sometime around 5 am in the two-storey wooden and concrete house which was well secured with grillwork on the windows and doors.
The report explained that the father of the deceased was awakened by an acrid smell after which he made checks and observed that the entire house was filled with thick smoke. As a result, he alerted other family members, who managed to escape using an inner stairway leading to the bottom flat of the home. However, Chung was trapped in her bedroom and later perished in the fire.
Chung worked as a supervisor at Massy Motors Guyana Ltd.
