A third year medical student of the University of Guyana yesterday afternoon drowned during an outing with friends at St. Ignatius, central Rupununi.
The deceased is twenty-four-year-old Kimberlee Yow of St. Ignatius Village. Yow, who could not swim was yesterday afternoon picked up from her home by friends and they headed to a creek situated at the back of the village where the incident occurred.
When this newspaper contacted an older sister of the deceased, Delilah Prudencio, she said Yow was picked up by friends around 3pm. Yow could not say when exactly her sister drowned but recalled getting a call shortly after 6pm last evening.
“Kimmy left to go and swim with her friends. I really don’t know what exactly happened. I got a call about minutes after six saying that there’s an emergency with my sister and they tell me that she drowned and asked if I hear anything so I told them no, is now I hearing. My brother decided to go to the location only to find out that she did drown”, a sorrowing Prudencio said.
Prudencio said that her sister didn’t know to swim and believes it is possible Yow went a bit too far in. Yow’s family is still trying to learn of how the young woman drowned and when exactly the tragic incident occurred.
Yow’s body is currently at the Lethem Public Hospital mortuary.
The youngest of six, Yow was described as a vivacious individual. Yow who had resided in Georgetown to attend UG prior to COVID had moved back to her village owing to the pandemic where she was said to be pursuing her studies online.
