A police sergeant has been placed under close arrest after an Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast man who he allegedly chopped succumbed to the wounds he sustained.
The dead man has been identified as Patrick George, 73.
He was allegedly chopped on his forehead, chest and wrist during the incident which took place around 1.45 pm on Sunday.
The police discovered George’s lifeless body lying on his step around 10 am yesterday.
The police sergeant, who is stationed in Region Two was placed under close arrest as the investigation continues.
According to the police, enquiries revealed that the Sergeant was cleaning in and around his residence when he was approached by George.
George reportedly pulled a galvanised sheet from a fence separating his residence from the one which the Sergeant was cleaning in order to gain access.
During the process, the police said George attacked the Sergeant with a cutlass and a piece of metal, which he was armed with.
As such, the police added that the Sergeant retaliated and allegedly chopped George.
George then dropped the piece of metal and cutlass and escaped through the said fence, the police said.
Ranks acting on information yesterday went to George’s house where they discovered his lifeless body.
A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted before the end of this week.
