Just after 2 pm yesterday, the high tide penetrated a faulty sluice door, causing flooding in yards of residents of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice.
The sluice door, which was undergoing remedial works recently, failed to close after the repairs were completed.
According to Roy Jafarally, Chairman of the Ordinance/Fortlands Neighbourhood Democratic Council, it was then that the high tides came and ‘caught them on the job’. Jafarally went on to say that water flowed in for about 40 minutes before quick thinking allowed for them to use a jack and close the door. “We have now rectified the problem and we are using a jack to get it right down so that it can close”, he said around 3.30 pm yesterday afternoon.
The incidence provoked responses by residents that was not confined to the flooding alone, with some residents claiming that they and their community are being ignored. One resident, Mena Chattergoon, 58, said, the water started to overflow just around 2.30 pm and they were forced to place sandbags around their grocery shop.
