Golden Jaguars international Ryan Hackett has swapped the Tucville ground and boyhood club Fruta Conquerors for Camp Ayanganna and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Hackett, 21, who made the move during the ongoing transfer period, told Stabroek Sport that the decision to move to the army unit was based on several factors.
“It’s really a big decision. I just feel more of my future is at GDF because they have better facilities, gyms and doctors and there are also the financial reasons behind the move. I feel I could better focus on my game and work harder because I won’t have any distractions. I see this as a big move for me. That is the reason for moving,” said Hackett in the exclusive interview.
Hackett, who has also been capped at the U20 level, stated that while both the army and police clubs are home to quality players, the disciplined nature and mantra of the former, influenced and sealed his choice over the latter.
He expounded, “GDF has quality players and taking nothing away from Police who also have quality players as well, I think GDF is a much more disciplined team and that was a big factor in my choice.”
According to Hackett he is focused on working hard to improve his positional play, which will aid in achieving the team’s ultimate objective of being successful in their pursuit of respective tournaments and championships.
He explained, “When the season starts, I will try my best for them to win tournaments and contribute more to the team. I work hard to be better in my position, help the team to build and be disciplined both on and off the field because it’s a team that strives for discipline at all times.”
Hackett said that he is envisioning facing his old side when football activities eventually resume adding that he will treat the match like any other fixture and look to emerge victorious.
“I am looking forward to playing Fruta Conquerors but also for any game and perform to GDF’s expected level,” he declared.
The attacking midfielder is currently a member of the Golden Jaguars training squad which is preparing for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers set to commence in March.
He declared that his aim is to display his quality during this training period which will improve his chances of solidifying a spot on the final roster.
“Things are going great there. I have been training for a while and getting back fit. I am looking to do my best and train hard and get into the practice matches and overall get selected for the World Cup Qualifiers,” he said.
