(Trinidad Guardian) Police are investigating an attempt on a prison officer’s life on Thursday night at his home in Sangre Grande.

According to a police officer, around 8.55 pm the 28-year-old prison officer, who is assigned to the Carrera Island prison, was at his home in Sangre Grande when he was approached by a man armed with a gun while in the driveway of his home.

The gunman, police said pointed the gun at the officer, who attempted to run away. While he was running, police said, the gunman opened fire on him and then ran off.

The officer was not shot, however, was injured when he stumbled and fell.

He was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital where he was treated and discharged for an injury to the right knee.

The scene was visited by A/Insp Ramkissoon, PC Blake of the Sangre Grande CID, and Eastern Division Task Force under the supervision of PC Salina, WPC Sanchez, and PC Hosein of the Sangre Grande CSI.

Further enquiries were conducted in the Duranta Gardens Area which led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man of Bonsai Circular Duranta Gardens North Eastern Settlement, Sangre Grande.

The suspect who is now in police custody is said to be assisting police in their investigations.
