An undisclosed number of students at the University of Guyana (UG) are expected to face disciplinary action after the university received a “selfie video” showing the students breaching the COVID-19 guidelines.
UG in a press release acknowledged receipt of the video in question late last night stating, “The Administration finds this unfortunate and deeply disturbing and has taken immediate corrective action.”
At present the administration is trying to identify the students involved and once this is done, they will “face disciplinary action under the Acts and Statutes of the University immediately.”
The release explained that while the majority of the university’s classes are held exclusively online, there are students whose courses include laboratory components which are required to be completed before the students could be allowed to graduate. The administration further stated that in allowing the laboratory classes to continue on the premises of the university, students and staff were under strict COVID-19 protocols which required them to sanitise, mask-up, and maintain the necessary social distancing.
The Office of Occupational health and Safety of the university took the opportunity to remind staff and students that there must be strict adherence to the protocols as stated on the University’s website at https://uog.edu.gy/documents/covid-19-documents . These measures were developed to protect staff and students in the context of the pandemic, the release also stated.
