In an effort to increase the interest of cricket, Sophia Cricket Club benefited from a quantity of gear and cash from Regal Sports and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Amit Das.
At a simple ceremony at the store’s Seaforth Street, Campbellville location, Marketing Consultant Divesh Ramjattan presented the club’s president, Garth Allen, with the gear as well as a monetary donation.
“We are very thankful for the donation Regal has given to us and I can assure you the gear you have given us will not go to waste. The gear will definitely enhance the club’s performance overall,” Allen said.
“We are a very poor club and most of our sponsorship comes from Regal and we are thankful for the support over the years and we look forward to working with them in the future,” he added.
The club is affiliated to the Georgetown Cricket Association and Ramjattan and Das are the current elected Public Relations Officer and Assistant Treasurer respectively.
Sophia CC, which was formed over a decade ago, currently takes part in the 40-over tournaments, having pulled out of the two-day format due to lack of funding.
The President informed that it is the intention to bring in more sponsors and members in order to venture into the youth divisions.
Allen added that the club is also challenged with getting its ground in order. Allen called on the Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., to lend some assistance, noting the active work of the ministry to develop facilities.
“We would like if we could get some support from the Sports Ministry and help us to upgrade the ground which is located at ‘C’ Field Sophia,” Allen said.
Ramjattan related, this is something that has been done over the years and “what we also pledged to the club is the support to the ground in terms of trying to develop it to a level that they could train and try to get more members from the community coming out.”
Both parties agreed that the donation will look to help curb the negative influences children of the community are faced with and have a positive avenue to turn towards.
