The first edition of the Speaker’s International Softball Cup was officially launched Friday at the Everest Cricket Club, Carifesta Avenue and Camp Road.
The tournament was commissioned by Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir who is also president of the club.
According to the organisers, the tournament is booked for April 2-4 and have so far confirmed 16 teams, six of which are from overseas.
The tournament will feature two categories, namely Over-45 Masters and Over-50 Legends. As such, persons playing in the Over-45 division will have to be born in 1976 or before while the Over-50’s cut off year is 1971.
There will be man of the match prizes in each match as well as lucrative prizes for the man of the series in each division.
Also there will be a match referee in the tournament and nationally recognised umpires from the Georgetown Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association
Nadir, during his introduction contended that there are plans in the pipeline to have a hardball version of the tournament that will span over a few months but this format is more welcoming to “veterans” such as himself.
Another consideration to have the tournament in a softball format was the weather with this form being more accommodating to rainy weather.
Already a number of sponsors have come on board including, MMD Hollow Blocks and Pavers, Trophy Stall, V-Net Communications, New Doctors Clinic, Beacon Café, Coss Cutters, General Marines, ACS Mining and Raj Ace Auto.
