West Indies head coach, Phil Simmons, has praised his troops after their win in the first Test in Bangladesh but believes there is still room for improvement.
Simmons engaged the media on Monday and said that improvement in all aspects is a fundamental thing if a team wants to dominate.
“I think every time you win its more important that you look at ways to improve and that’s the way we are going to look at it.
“Yes you’ve done well but how do we improve on that because one thing you know is when someone loses or a team loses they are going to try and find a way to improve and get better so we as winners have to do the same and make sure we improve in all aspects,” he declared.
“We want that 100 percent in every aspect. We want that 100 percent with the ball. We can still limit them to instead of 400 you can limit them to 300 and something so there are more than one things to improve on and that’s what we are going to be focusing on how do we improve on the performance at Chattogram,” said Simmons.
He brushed off criticisms of past results.
“I think if you continue to look at the past without trying to find a solution for the future then we’re in problems and all we did since we got here was to try and find a way to nullify their potent spin attack by improving our ability to play spin and at the same time just try and make sure we are doing all the work that is necessary to win the game.”
He said the preparatyion wasn’t anything different.
“We prepared like we would prepare for any Test series. It wasn’t anything different. We had to work on our ability to play spin a little bit more and get our game plan in for playing spin and that is what we did. On the last day we had a chat on the morning and we had a chat at lunch time and at tea time and we just decided what we are going to do in the next session or the last session to win the game. It was simple, it wasn’t, you know intervening as such.”
The former West Indies opening batsman underscored the importance of the victory for the Caribbean people around the world, referencing the impact COVID-19 has so far had on the region.
“I think it’s a huge thing for West Indies Cricket, for West Indies people on the whole in a time like this to win a game like that. We have lifted so many west Indians around the world and given them a rare light in some dark times in some of the islands we’ve had so much cases recently so I think the way how we prepared has given me a lot of joy and then to see that it’s come through and put into action on the field, it’s been great,” he opined. The second Test begins on Friday.
