A security guard was killed on Thursday night in an accident along Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of the University of Guyana (UG) Access Road, where she and a policeman collided.
The accident occurred around 10.30 pm as Bridget Rodrigues, 63, of School Street, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was riding her motorcycle.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a statement, stated that Rodrigues collided with a car driven by a 20 year-old police constable attached to the Brickdam Police Station’s Traffic Department.
Police enquiries revealed that the police constable was proceeding east along the southern lane of the highway, while Rodrigues was riding in the same direction.
The report explained that while the rank was approaching the intersection at UG Access Road he collided with Rodrigues as she attempted to turn into the southern lane.
As a result of the collision, she fell and suffered injuries.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were called and pronounced Rodrigues dead at the scene.
The vehicles were lodged to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol in his breath, the police said. However, the rank remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.
Meanwhile, a friend of the deceased told this newspaper that Rodrigues recently bought the motorcycle. She described her as a friendly individual who continuously shared encouragement.
