Crabwood Creek fisher awaits sentencing after admitting to killing friend

A fisherman from Crab-wood Creek, Upper Corentyne, is now awaiting sentencing after he admitted to killing a friend some three years ago.

Stanley Mark Edwards pleaded guilty to man-slaughter when he appear-ed before Justice Simone Morris Ramlall at the High Court in Berbice on Thursday.

Edwards admitted to fatally beating his friend, Sahadeo Sankar, 40, in January of 2018.

Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy told the court that the deceased, 40, and the accused were drinking at Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, when they had an argument. She said the two had a scuffle and the deceased fell to the ground, after which the accused began stamping the deceased on his face until his feet started to hurt.

According to the prosecutor, the cause of death was given as multiple injuries sustained to the head, and the accused was arrested at the scene and confessed to the crime. Attorney Surihya Sabsook, pointed out that the accused confessed to the crime and assisted the police. She said he was previously convicted for simple larceny but asked for lenience to be exercised. The accused, who will return to court on February 24th for sentencing, also asked the judge for mercy.
