Tremayne Smartt’s all-round performance led New Amsterdam/Canje to a 48-run win over West Berbice/Achievers yesterday in the final match of the Berbice Cricket Board/Nand Persaud T20 female tournament.
Playing on home territory at the Rose Hall, Canje ground, New Amsterdam/Canje won the toss and decided to take first strike, posting 135 all out in 30 overs before bundling out West Berbice for a spirited 87 in 24 overs.
The hosts were in a spot of bother after losing Aliyah Samaroo in the first over without a run on the board. They then lost two more wickets for seven runs. However, Ashmini Munisar (13) and Lafona Gilgeous revived the innings and carried the score to 33 before Gilgeous was stumped off of Tia Isaacs.
The dismissal brought Smartt to the crease and she duly top scored with 35 runs, with a solitary boundary, before she was run out.
The West Indies women’s team all-rounder, was supported by Kassie Munro who made 27, laced with two boundaries.
No other batter passed two runs.
Devona Frank picked up 2-11 and was supported by her opening partner, Isaacs with 2-20.
In reply, Katana Mentore resisted with an unbeaten 37, decorated with three boundaries and received support from Rachel Liverpool with 16.
However a hat-trick from Smartt that condemned West Berbice/Achievers to a second place finish in the tournament, $20,000 and a trophy.
Smartt, who played 57 One Day Internationals and 58 T20Is for West Indies women’s team, bagged 4-17 and was complemented by Ashmini Munisar who took 2-7.
According to the Berbice Cricket Board, the tournament was used to select the Berbice senior female squad to play against Demerara in two matches as part of the Inter-County tournament. The squad is expected to be announced today.
