The driver of the lorry in the accident which claimed the life of Murvey Andrew Madhoo was on Monday released on $300,000 bail after he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Troy Van Lewis, 34, of Lot 1159 Yarrowkabra Village, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, made his appearance before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to him.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on February 20, in the vicinity of Dora Public Road, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, he drove in a dangerous manner thereby causing the death of Madhoo.
He was ordered to return to court on 15th March 2021, when the matter will be called again.
The police had said the accident occurred at about 8 pm on the Dora Public Road, where a truck, driven by Lewis, crashed into a stationary pick-up, GRR 4627, resulting in the death of Madhoo, 60, of Independence Boulevard La Penitence, Georgetown, and in the process injuring Sherwin Rhodius.
Police had said the pick-up, GRR 4627, was stationary on the western side of the road as goods were being transferred to another pick-up when the truck, which was proceeding at a fast rate, lost control and collided with the pick-up, which then hit Madhoo and Rhodius, who were standing between the two pick-ups.
A Breathalyzer test that was conducted on the driver of the truck found that he was below the prescribed limits.
Meanwhile, Rhodius, a 46-year-old mechanic of Hadfield Street, George-town, remains hospitalised having sustained a fractured skull, orbital fractures in three places around his left eye, and a fractured left hand.
