The decomposed body of a Wakenaam woman was discovered in her home yesterday after her granddaughter had reported her disappearance to the police.
Dead is 78-year-old Sahodra Stephen, a pensioner of Lot 15 Dum-burg, Wakeanaam Island, Essequibo River. According to the police, her decomposed body was discovered yesterday after the woman’s granddaughter, Janelle Stewart, 35, of Lot 18 Public Road, Noitgedacht, Wake-naam Island, visited the Sans Souci Police Station at about 18:35 hrs yesterday and reported that she had not seen her grandmother. Police subsequently accompanied the woman to the deceased’s house.
When the ranks visited the house, they found that the door leading to the upper flat of the house was locked from the inside. Entry was then forced and as the ranks were going up the stairs a strong stench permeated the upper flat.
The woman was found in the middle bedroom in the upper flat of the three-bedroom house. It was stated that the mosquito net was down over the bed and the woman could be seen under the net. Her body which was swollen and in a decomposing state was examined and no mark of violence was observed.
According to police, the woman was last seen alive on February 11. A young woman who lives near the dead pensioner told investigators that the woman was seen on February 11 and she had mentioned that she would be going to Georgetown the following day. It is unclear whether the woman made the trip.
