With a jury unable to arrive at verdicts in the matter against them for the murder of Ruby fisherman Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, former Region Three AFC councillor Mandy Sukhdeo, her father, Surendra Sukhdeo, a Good Hope/ Hydronie Neighbourhood Democratic Council APNU councillor and their neighbour Rean Ghani will all now have to face retrials.
Following hours of deliberations yesterday afternoon, the jury was deadlocked and unable to arrive at verdicts.
Trial judge Navindra Singh then informed the jointly charged trio that they will remain on remand to face new trials.
The charge against them is that on Valentine’s Day—February 14th, 2017 they murdered Nazamudeen.
In her opening address to the jury, Prosecutor Tiffini Lyken had said that Nazamudeen, formerly of Lot 117 Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, was beaten to death at the hands of the jointly-charged trio, all of whom resided in the Ruby area.
She had said that the young man died of shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries, compounded by blunt trauma to the head.
He had been rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he subsequently died.
Police investigations later led to the arrest and detention of Ghani and the Sukhdeos.
The accused were represented by defence attorneys Nigel Hughes and Khemraj Ramjattan.
