A labourer was on Wednesday sentenced to eight months in jail after he admitted to climbing through the roof of a convenience store and stealing credit and cash.
Andrew Arjune, 31, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown and he admitted to a break and enter and larceny charge.
He was sentenced to eight months in jail after pleading guilty to the charge that between February 19th and February 20th, at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, he broke and entered the convenience store of Robin Lowe and stole a quantity of Digicel and GTT phone cards, two cellphones and cash, all totaling to $803,000, and property of Lowe.
Chief Magistrate McLennan sentenced him to eight months in jail after he told the court that he was sorry for committing the crime and asked the magistrate for a short sentence. “I sorry what I do and I asking for a short time,” Arjune told the court. “I make a mistake,” he added.
The police prosecutor stated that according to the facts, on the day in question at about 1.40 am, a staff member on duty at the Shell gas station observed the man hanging around. The woman left to go to the washroom and upon returning she checked the store and observed that the man had gotten inside. The prosecutor said that she raised an alarm and her colleague, also a security guard, responded but the man made good his escape.
The court heard that on February 20th at about 6am, Lowe made checks of the store and discovered the items mentioned in the charge were missing. He then made a report to the Alberttown Police Station. The police were then able to arrest Arjune after information about his whereabouts was made provided to the police.
The man was arrested and when the police searched his person, one of the stolen phones was found on him, the prosecutor told the court.
The prosecutor also said that he told the police that “I want money, so I raid the store” and that he gained entry through the roof.
