Shelly Modeste, the five year-old Essequibo girl who was found dead in her bed in the wee hours of Thursday morning, died as a result of an infection in the abdomen.
Modeste, of Essequibo Coast, was struck in the abdomen by a ball during a cricket game with her family on Wednesday.
The autopsy was conducted yesterday and the Guyana Police Force released the results. According to a police report, she was discovered to be dead at about midnight by her sister, who went to check on her. It was reported that although the child was hit in her abdomen by the ball, she continued playing the game.
The report said some 15 minutes after, the child went into the house and eventually went to sleep.
She was checked on by her mother at about 7pm and according to her mother’s report, she was sleeping and everything seemed to be normal. However, when her sister entered the bed she was sleeping on, she felt that the deceased was cold and raised an alarm. Her mother then went to inspect her and observed that a white substance was coming out of her nose.
The child was rushed to the Charity Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
