The police in Region Three are investigating the alleged rape of a female minor and the suspect has already been arrested.
According to a police press release, the attack on the victim, who is under 16, occurred yesterday.
Last week, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn disclosed that authorities have received a total of 83 sexual assault reports between August, 2020 and January this year, 61 of which were prosecuted.
The figures represented an overall increase in the number of reports received and prosecutions when compared to the same period one year earlier, where there were 77 reports, 28 of which were prosecuted.
Benn made the disclosure in a written response to a question asked by APNU+AFC Member of Parliament Geeta Chandan-Edmond. The answer was circulated during last Wednesday’s sitting of the National Assembly.
Chandan-Edmond also asked to be provided with figures on how many of these cases had convictions, but this was not provided by Benn.
