An eighteen-month-old child has been hospitalised with a fractured skull after she was knocked down by her father yesterday morning while he was reversing his car.

The child has been identified as Adena Ramkissoon of Lot 158 Broad Street, Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.

According to a police report, the toddler’s father, Danny Ramkissoon who is a taxi driver was about to leave home for work using his white old-model Raum car when he reportedly felt as though the car had run over something.

The report further stated that the man then stopped the car, exited and upon checking found his daughter lying motionless under the left rear side of the car. The child was rushed to the hospital where she was admitted as a patient.

At the time this report was sent out, the toddler’s condition was listed as critical. It was later learnt by this newspaper that the child’s condition has improved and though she remains unconscious, her condition is said to now be stable.

When Stabroek News visited the home of the family, the mother of the toddler, Sattie Narayan was still trying to come to grips with the incident. She noted that the incident occurred sometime after eight o’ clock yesterday morning.

“I was cooking inside and she was eating. I spread a towel and put she to eat in the corner with her bowl. Then, she father answer the phone and said he going on a work and within two minutes after that, she father was by the door holding she in he hands telling me, she went behind the car and he ain’t see and he reverse. After that ah started screaming…”, the traumatized woman recollected.

Narayan shared that she has three older children with her husband, Adena being the youngest with an eleven year difference between her and the third child. Ramkissoon, the father of the child operates a home-based taxi service called Leisure Taxi Service.  Narayan explained that because there is not much space in the yard, vehicles would be parked outside of the yard including her husband’s car. She further shared that her husband was trying to turn the car around when the incident occurred.

“She’s stable in the ICU but she’s unconscious. She’s breathing on her own. The doctors ordered blood for her. She was a bit pale this midday (yesterday) but when we went back this afternoon (yesterday afternoon), she had lil colour in her cheeks.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The incident comes less than twenty-four hours after a toddler from Mahaica was crushed to death by his father who was reversing a lorry at the time.
