The police are investigating the alleged theft of an electronic tablet belonging to Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Haimraj Rajkumar during Friday’s sitting of the National Assembly.
The reported theft is said to have occurred sometime between 10 am last Friday and 8 am on Saturday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), Liliendaal.
According to a police press release, enquiries revealed that Rajkumar, 54, placed the tablet which is worth $60,000 in his computer bag at ACCC on Friday morning.
On Saturday morning, the police said he checked for the tablet while at his Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara residence when he discovered it was missing.
An investigation has since been launched into the incident.
Stabroek News understands that the police were alerted after Rajkumar informed the Clerk of the National Assembly that his device could not be located.
Two days before this, the police were summoned to ACCC after Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Cathy Hughes reported that her laptop was missing.
Stabroek News understands that Hughes secured her laptop along with several documents in her briefcase before leaving for lunch when Parliament was suspended around 12 pm on February 25th.
She left her briefcase in the dome and when she returned she opened it and found that her laptop was missing but all other documents were there.
Hours after, the laptop resurfaced at the back of Hughes’ seat when the sitting resumed after the afternoon break.
