A few days after failing Cricket West Indies (CWI) administered fitness tests, Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase have both passed their latest assessment and are now available for selection.
This was revealed in a video update by CWI’s Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, yesterday.
According to Adams, “It’s just to give an update, we had a press conference very recently and we had explained that there were some players who had missed the minimum fitness standard for selection and just an update, two of those four players have since then met that standard so that’s Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer.”
Adams has insisted that the players are well aware of the minimum fitness requirements needed to be considered for selection before even individual form is considered.
Based on an agreement between CWI and the West Indies Player Association (WIPA), players must achieve a rating of 40 during the evaluative yoyo fitness test to be considered for selection.
“It’s pretty simple and all the players are aware of it. Failure to get to 40 makes them unavailable for selection so when the panel sits, the first thing that they will consider before looking at the teams and the squads they want to put together, is who are the players that are available through achieving that minimum standard,” Adams said in a recent conference.
CWI, when announcing the T20I and One Day International squads for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka stated in a release, “Fast bowlers Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas, along with batsman Shimron Hetmyer, and all-rounder Roston Chase all failed to reach the minimum fitness standard in time for selection consideration. They will all remain in Antigua after the CGI Insurance Super50 Cup to work on their fitness and conditioning.”
Shortly after, both Chase and Hetmyer were named in the ‘Best v Best’ match squads as practice for the upcoming series.
“So they [Chase and Hetmyer] would now be available for selection for I would say the next selection meeting which should be around the Test matches coming up later in March.”
