Quacy Decunha, the driver who was recently sentenced for causing the death of a motorcyclist, along the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara was yesterday fined on five traffic charges.

Decunha of Supply, East Bank Demerara, appeared virtually before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court, yesterday when he changed his plea to traffic charges in relation to the fatal accident.

Originally, Decunha pleaded not guilty when he was read the charges by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magis-trate’s Court. However, yesterday, he pleaded guilty to failure to render assistance, for which he was fined $40,000 or eight weeks imprisonment; failure to stop at the scene after an accident, for which he was fined $40,000 or eight weeks imprisonment; failure to report the accident, for which he was fined $35,000 or eight weeks imprisonment; for driving without a motor licence, he was fined $20,000 or eight weeks imprisonment, and for driving an uninsured motor vehicle, he was also fined $20,000 or eight weeks imprisonment.

Magistrate Latchman had sentenced Decunha to 48 months in prison for the charge which stated that on January 25, 2020, at Craig Public Road, he drove motor car PVV 8691 in a dangerous manner, resulting in the death of Dhanraj Budhram, 47, of Belle West, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara.

Stabroek News had reported that Bhudram, who was an employee of Gafoor’s, died after being involved in a vehicular accident on the Craig Public Road as he was on his way home. A relative, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News that the accident occurred at around 12.20 am on January 25.  At the time, Budhram was travelling home from his workplace at Gafoor’s Com-plex, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara. He was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by the car, this newspaper was told.

Stabroek News also understands that after the collision, the driver drove away from the scene without offering assistance and it was left to public-spirited citizens to rush Budhram to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre on the East Bank of Demerara, where he succumbed while being treated.

It was also reported that the driver later showed up at the police station with his lawyers.
