Two Berbice residents were yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with trafficking almost 100 pounds of cannabis.
Veerasammy Armogan, called ‘Vishal,’ 33, a taxi driver, of 1779 Crabwood Creek Corentyne, Ber-bice and Alma John, of 68 Glas-gow Village, East Bank Berbice, appeared virtually before Magis-trate Renita Singh-Jagdeo at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where they were each faced with a narcotics trafficking charge.
The particulars of the charge against Armogan states that between February 1st and March 3rd, he arranged for John and others to traffic 44.947 kilogrammes of cannabis (equivalent to just over 99 pounds).
It is alleged that John stored the narcotics at her home before she helped load it into the trunk of a vehicle.
The cannabis was subsequently intercepted at Princess Elizabeth Street, New Amsterdam.
They pleaded both not guilty and Armogan’s lawyer made representation for him to be granted bail, while the unrepresented John did so on behalf of herself. However, they were remanded to prison until March 26th, 2021, when the prosecution is expected to disclose statements.
