An Enmore man was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to breaking into a woman’s home and stealing valuables amounting to almost $300,000.
Twenty six-year-old Charles Rodney, of Enmore Estate, East Coast Demerara, appeared virtually at the Georgetown Magistrates Court and admitted to a break and enter and larceny charge.
It was alleged that on January 15th, at Lot 237 Pike Street, Campbellville, he broke into and entered the dwelling house of Sharon Kissoon and stole two televisions, a laptop, a Fire TV Stick streaming device, and a cooking-gas bottle, all amounting to $284,000.
The police prosecutor informed the court that Rodney is currently on remand for a simple larceny charge. He then told the court that on the day in question, Kissoon secured her home and then left. Upon returning home some time later, she found that her front door was open. She then made checks of her home and discovered that the items stated in the charge were missing. She then made a report at the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost.
After pleading guilty, Rodney told the court that on the day in question, he was imbibing with friends. He said that he became light headed and cannot recall what happened. He added that he was unsure of where he was and asked a friend to take him home. He then said that he was sorry for the offence committed and asked that the court show sympathy when sentencing.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan sentenced him to 18 months in jail and told him that the court is taking into account the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic threatens the safety of inmates.
