It was a joy to watch or to listen to cricket on the radio cricket or TV

Dear Editor,

Please allow me some space in your column to express my sadness on radio and television coverage in Guyana on Guyana’s cricket as well as West Indies cricket. For the longest while now, we in Guyana have been suffering from not getting to follow our national team and the West Indies team due to no coverage or lack of sponsorship. Whatever it is, it has put a serious dent in cricket being followed by ordinary Guyanese who cannot afford the luxury of internet. I used to follow the victorious Guyana Under-19 teams in the Northern Telecom’s West Indies youth tournament which Guyana had dominated. We had cricketers like the Percivals’, the Nagamootoos’, the Chinsammys’, the De Groots’, the Haniffs’, the Dhanirams’, the Lamberts’ and the list goes on.

With no cricket on TV or Radio our youngsters are losing interest in the game. Our young cricketers need motivation by watching these games on TV or listening on the radio with some of our experienced commentators like Sean Devers, Inderjeet Persaud , Allan Bazilio, Naim Chan, Reds Pereira, Sidney Jackman just to name a few. It was just very inspiring the way they explained the game, for example, field settings and rules governing this wonderful game that we all love so much. I call on the business community to support our cricket just by sponsoring a few segments. I would like to ask our very active minister of sports to intervene and see how best he can help to address this problem.

Sincerely,

Anthony Welaidum!
