Six People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) councillors resigned from the Rosignol/Zeelust Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and then did an about-face after meeting with party leaders.
In a press release last evening, the PPP said the six councillors— Chairman Chate Puran, Vice Chairman Iqbal Alli, Haimwattie Persaud, Joseph Tribhawan, Samuel Jagnandan and Agnes Karamchand—withdrew their resignations after meeting with PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, and Central and Executive Committee members Zulfikar Mustapha and Nigel Dharamlall at the party’s Freedom House headquarters, located on Robb Street, Georgetown.
The meeting came one day after the councillors reportedly sent in their resignation letters with effect as of yesterday.
It is unclear what motivated their resignations.
However, the release stated that the councillors were “agonized by the fact that their resignation over a particular matter was falsely portrayed by the APNU/AFC and its surrogates as a loss of confidence in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government.”
The release said that in refuting the claim, the Councillors noted that the community and NDC of Rosignol/Zeelust have suffered from “neglect, wanton discrimination and lack of accountability” during the APNU+AFC’s time in office.
The release added that the councillors sought the assistance of the PPP and the government in accelerating development in their NDC and reaffirmed their commitment to that cause.
