Guyana’s national beach football team will not compete in the 2021 Concacaf beach soccer championships following the official draw for participating nations Monday.
The Guyanese were missing from the 12 team draw for the prestigious tournament which will be held in Alajuela, Costa Rica from May 17-23. The tournament will determine the confederation’s two representatives at the FIFA beach soccer World Cup in Moscow, Russia, from August 19-29. Guyana participated in the 2017 and 2019 tournaments finishing 12th in their maiden campaign and failing to progress from the group round two years later.
According to a release from Concacaf, “The Concacaf Beach Soccer Rankings as of December 19 were used to distribute the teams into four pots, with the draw dividing the teams into three groups of four teams. The 2021 CBSC will begin with a group stage, followed by a knockout stage. After round-robin play, the top two finishers in each group and the two best third place teams will advance to the knockout stage. The two teams that reach the Final will qualify for the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.”
Group-A comprises Mexico, Panama, Guadeloupe and Belize while Group-B is made up of El Salvador, Bahamas, Guatemala and Dominican Republic. Group-C consists of the United States, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
