Guymine Cricket Club marked its return to competitive cricket with a six-wicket win over Tucber Park A to win the Berbice Cricket Board/Jeremy Gordon Challenge Cup Sunday.
Playing at the Edinburgh Ground, Tucber Park A batted first, making 95 for eight in 15 overs.
Berbice under-19 skipper, Gevon Schultz top scored with 27 and former national youth player, Garfield Benjamin, made 18. Veteran Charlie Shepherd took 4-22.
Guymine, in reply, needed five runs
from the final over bowled by Benjamin, whose first delivery was struck for a boundary. He recovered well to take two wickets but eventually bowled a wide to hand Guymine as they scampered to 96 for six with one ball to spare.
Seamer, Orlando Tanner took 2-10 from three overs.
Former Berbice youth player, Joel Seitram stroked one six and two fours in 22 while Roger Williams made 18.
Earlier, Guymine advanced to the final after beating East Bank Blazers by six wickets in another last-ball thriller while Tucber Park A defeated hosts Edinburgh by 29 runs. Both matches were reduced to 10-over affairs after early morning showers.
Gordon, a former member of the Tucber Park CC, who now resides in Toronto, Canada and has represented Canada at the international level, expressed his support for the development of the game in Berbice.
BCB Executive Member Neil Rudder hailed the tournament as a resounding success and expressed thanks to Gordon for his sponsorship.
Rudder also congratulated the host Edinburgh CC for making sure that all the Covid-19 guidelines set down by the BCB was followed during the day.
