Golf will take a new format on Saturday when the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) hosts the Oasis Café/Akamai Trading tournament.
According to vice-president of the LGC, Paton George at the tournament’s launch yesterday, this will be a new tournament and will see two teams competing against each other for supremacy.
Individuals will also battle it out for glory.
“Here you will have a match-play format between two teams comprising of 20-25 members per team. Within the competition you will also have competitions with people going up against each other so it’s a new format, a very exciting format and we are going to be handing out a lot of prizes at the end of the tournament,” George explained.
The 18-hole tournament will begin from the usual noon start with those interested, to register prior at the club.
“We are encouraging everyone to turn out and enjoy a very festive environment, COVID-friendly of course. We always provide a COVID-friendly environment. Golf always lends itself to COVID compliance just by the nature of the sport.”
The vice-president indicated that there will be a $30,000 prize for the winning team which will be available through the bar and restaurant located in the clubhouse.
Meanwhile proprietor of the Carmichael Street-based eatery, Oasis Café, avid golfer, William Walker, thanked the club for featuring a format like this.
“I am very thankful that the Lusignan Golf Club is accommodating this format of play. Match-play if you don’t know too much about golf, is really a very pure form of golf and is something I enjoy and I know my opposite team captain, Brian Hackett enjoys. I think it will be a good time and I also encourage members of the public to come out and get involved in golf more. It’s a very interesting game and something we want more people to be a part of,” he said.
LCG President, Patanjalee ‘Pur’ Persaud, expressed gratitude to Walker and Hackett of the power solution giant, Akamai Trading for their input towards the development of golf.
“It’s going to be an exciting tournament,” he said.
“We expect a very challenged golf tournament this weekend. It’s going to stand up with the best in the country going to compete against each other. It’s going to be very competitive. I estimate we will have about 50 of the best players competing this weekend,” Persaud said noting that the format would usually be played on a friendly basis but the club decided to take it one step forward.
Persaud stated noted that they will be in conformity with the COVID-19 regulations.
