Health authorities are currently making arrangements have Members of Parliament (MPs) vaccinated in the new week, according to health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony.
This disclosure was made during the minister’s COVID-19 update on Thursday as he was giving a progress report on the vaccination exercise in Guyana. As the inoculation of persons age 60 years and older began on Wednesday, he stated that a number of persons including former Presidents, Donald Ramotar, Samuel Hinds, and David Granger have received their shots.
It was then that he stated that arrangements are currently being worked out for Members of Parliament to receive vaccines with this tranche if they so desire. “We have also been talking to the parliament and we are making arrangements to ensure that MPs who would like to have their vaccines in this round, we’re able to give the vaccines to them.”
Meanwhile in a post to social media, advisor to the Health Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy stated that the response by the over-60 demographic for the vaccine is overwhelming and as such is good news.
Dr Ramsammy noted that there were approximately four teams working at the Ministry of Health and a mobile team working on inoculating persons who are shut in. He added that due to the overwhelming response, there is a wait time to receive the vaccine.
During the update, Dr Anthony was again asked when he would be taking the vaccine and he said that the most important thing would be to make sure persons who desperately need the vaccine get it. “The most important thing is to make sure that people get their vaccines and that’s what I’m working on. I’ll eventually get mine, I really don’t have any hesitation to take it.”
The minister noted that he wants to ensure that the ministry does everything it can to ensure that there are vaccines in the country as quickly as possible and that is his main focus.
President Irfaan Ali, First lady Arya Ali received vaccines yesterday, while Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo was vaccinated on Thursday.
