With the construction of its terminal building and hangar facility nearing completion, Jags Aviation, a domestic charter service, has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for environmental authorisation for the project.
This development was disclosed in an EPA advertisement in the Sunday edition of the Guyana Chronicle.
The advertisement stated that the agency has since received an application for the construction of a Terminal Building with a hangar located at the Eugene F Correia International Airport at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
In keeping with the Environmental Protection Act, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required before any decision to either approve or reject a project is taken, since its development may have significant impacts on the environment.
However, it was pointed out that this project was screened by the agency and has been exempted from an Environmental Impact Assessment since it has been determined that it will not significantly affect the environment or human health. The screening was done in accordance with Section 11 (2) of the Environment Protection Act.
As part of the authorisation protocol, members of the public are invited, within 28 days of the notice, to make written submissions to the Agency, setting out questions and matters they require to be answered.
According to the project document, the construction of the terminal building is in its final stages and is being built on 1.43 acres of land. It was noted that this terminal will be a fully integrated facility for the handling of domestic, regional and international flights.
This terminal will have all standard features: an arrival and departure lounge, a customs and immigration checkpoint, a check-in area, a security checkpoint and baggage scanner, emergency medical services and an aircraft hangar.
Jags Aviation is currently operating out of the Guyana Sugar Corporation terminal at Ogle Airport.
The company, which is a member of the BK Group of Companies, stated that the new terminal is being established to allow for an expansion of the scope and scale of activities being conducted by Jags Aviation Inc.
“The new facility will also greatly enhance the local aviation sector by reducing the overcrowding and congestion taking place at the single, limited, main terminal now being utilized by all operators at the OIA,” the company said in their project summary to the EPA.
