Lindener Diana Chapman is eyeing not one but two competition wins having secured spots in the finals of both the Soca Monarch and Calypso Monarch on Thursday. The names of the other contestants for the competitions have not yet been revealed, but Diana is in for stiff competition from fellow Lindener Quincy ‘Ego’ Lacon who is also in the Calypso Monarch finals.
Last week, when Diana spoke with this newspaper she shared that she was entering her song, “Stage” for the Soca Monarch Competition, but was uncertain whether she would be taking on the Calypso Monarchy. At the last minute, however, the singer was able to enter the Calypso Competition also.
“Time to Heal” is the name of her other song, which was written and composed by Ssignal Productions producer Bonny Alves. It speaks about Guyana healing after a year of COVID-19 and elections. One line in the song beseeches former health minister Volda Lawrence and the current health minister Dr Frank Anthony to show political maturity and work together to stop COVID-19, and to seek better for the country.
Ego has made it to the Calypso finals also with a song that has the Bonny Alves touch, titled “Stop COVID Now”.
“Getting into the finals is once more a prayer answered for me,” Ego told The Scene. “It’s an achievement for my fans, my label, my family. I’m honoured to appeal to the people of this beautiful nation.” The song appeals to Guyanese to adhere to COVID guidelines and to exhibit common sense in protecting themselves and others.
“Meeting the top three spots in the competitions is no thunder for me. I am confident of placing in the competition…,” said Ego.
Dates have not yet been announced for the competitions, but it has been confirmed that they will be virtual so that people can tune in. The contestants, however, will be performing their songs in a physical setting.
