An 18-year-old Venezuelan woman was struck down yesterday on the Prospect Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The dead woman has been identified as Nazaretlt Palacio.
Police in a brief statement yesterday said that at the time of the accident, Palacio was allegedly running across the road in the vicinity of the Bikers’ Sports Bar. Enquiries disclosed that the motorcar, PTT 3955, driven by a 21-year-old of Diamond Housing Scheme was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the western carriageway of Prospect Road, EBD. The driver told police that he observed someone running across the road from west to east on the said carriageway into his path.
While he was about 50 feet away from the Bikers Sports Bar, he told police he felt an impact to the front of his vehicle.
As a result of the collision Palacio was flung into the air before landing on the car and finally onto the roadway some distance away. From all indications, she died on the spot as she bled profusely.
Residents close to the accident scene yesterday told Stabroek News they do not know the woman and only became aware of the accident after hearing the loud impact.
Police in their statement said a breathalyzer test was administered to the driver and it found no trace of alcohol on his breath.
Investigations are continuing.
