An elusive world title is still on Elton Dharry’s radar and the month of May will put him firmly back in the title hunt.
According to ‘The Guyanese Gladiator’, he is scheduled to get back in the ring in mid May in Panama against a hometown prospect yet to be named.
“I have not confirmed the date, but I think it will be around the second week in May” said Dharry yesterday.
“And it will be for a title in the super flyweight division, so I am being told. They haven’t put everything together yet but that is what they have been working on, my team and the promoter in Panama.”
The Brooklyn, USA-based fighter is re-energized after a year away from the ring and his mind and body is ready to take on all challenges in 2021.
“I’m going to work a lot on my strength this time looking for knockouts. I had some injuries over the year but I am healed up now to do my proper strength training to where I can look for the knockouts again,” he told Strabroek Sport in an exclusive interview yesterday.
Dharry has been training at the Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn and the Blue Line Gym in New Jersey and has armed himself with a new addition to his camp, Coach Scott Burrell.
“I will be working with Burrell. He is going to get me prepared very well physically. He is one of the main guys in my corner so coming out of this fight, I am hoping to come out closer to a world title.”
Following a failed bid to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight title in November, 2019 and an inactive 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dharry, 35, knows that the clock is ticking on his prime.
“I want a world title in my next few fights. Hopefully after this one I can get another shot. If I can get a shot right now, I will jump right on it but let’s see what happens, I will give everything to bring a title back home.”
Dharry (24-6-1, 14KOs) says he will be looking for KO number 15 in mid-May in an effort to propel him to a title shot.
