A sweets vendor and two others were yesterday read wounding and assault charges.
Denzil Benjamin, a sweets vendor of Robb Street, Lacytown; Carton Hazelwood, of West Ruimveldt Front Road; and Debra Payne, were present in the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts when they were separately charged and granted bail.
The particulars of the charges state that on January 20, at West Ruimveldt, Benjamin unlawfully and maliciously wounded Debra Payne and Carton Hazelwood. It is also alleged that Payne and Hazelwood unlawfully assaulted Benjamin.
The trio denied the charges brought against them.
The police prosecutor told the court that on the day in question, the three had a misunderstanding prompting Benjamin to use an iron bar to strike Hazelwood on the head and a box cutter which he used to inflict cuts on Payne. He also told the court that Benjamin was placed on station bail but did not return to the police station as directed. He was subsequently arrested and kept in custody.
Benjamin then explained to the court that he was told to return with a medical but since he did not get one, he did not go back to the police. He was then released on bail while Payne and Hazelwood were released on their own recognizance.
They will return to court on March 31.
