The persons who were in contact with the three patients who tested positive for COVID-19 in Sand Creek, Region Nine, have tested negative for the virus.
This was revealed by the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) Communications Officer Immaculata Casimero, who told Stabroek News yesterday that the doctor currently stationed at the community reported that all persons who had been in contact with the three COVID-19 patients tested negative.
Sand Creek is currently in a two-week lockdown which should conclude early next week. The lockdown was imposed by the Village Council after three persons tested positive for the virus. Two of those persons illegally travelled from Brazil, where a new and more transmissible COVID-19 variant is circulating.
Over 20 persons were tested after the Village Council discovered the presence of the two individuals, who had hosted a party.
According to Casimero, the two persons are asymptomatic and were discharged yesterday. However, the third person, who is symptomatic, will be discharged after two weeks. The SRDC assisted the families in quarantine by donating food supplies.
Meanwhile, it was disclosed that COVID-19 vaccination for the South Central Rupununi is underway. Persons 18 to 59 years old are being vaccinated with the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, while persons 60 years and older are being inoculated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) recently denied that persons under the age of 60 were being vaccinated. Over 70 persons from the South central Rupununi sub-district have been vaccinated thus far. The SRDC is encouraging persons to get vaccinated.
