Approximately 13,000 persons have been vaccinated since Guyana began its COVID-19 inoculation programme some weeks ago.
This is according to Advisor to the Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy who in a report by the Department of Public Information (DPI) stated that even though close to 13,000 persons were vaccinated, more could have been done.
The DPI report stated that the Advisor disclosed that the Ministry of Health is hoping to vaccinate at least 50,000 persons who are 50 years old and older by April 11. “We are trying that by the 11th of April that we vaccinate at least 50,000 persons 50 and older. And I know that number is so large, but we are quite capable of doing that,” he told DPI.
Ramsammy further noted that the ministry’s target for the week was to vaccinate 10,000 persons. However between Sunday and Wednesday, only around 7,000 persons have been vaccinated countrywide with the ministry expecting to achieve this goal by tomorrow. As such, it was stated that the vaccinations are expected to be extended to persons age 50 years and above, next week.
To this end the ministerial advisor acknowledged that there are issues as it relates to accessing vaccines, but assured that the government is working to ensure that adequate vaccines arrive in the country so that the vaccination process continues without interruption.
“We are going to make sure that enough vaccines arrive in the country so we don’t stop, so that we can continue, and even accelerate the pace,” Ramsammy was quoted as saying.
