A minor was yesterday charged and remanded over the murder of 10-year-old Anthony Cort, who was shot dead last week during a robbery in Sophia.
The 16-year-old accused was brought before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.
It is alleged that on March 11, at Packet Corner, ‘C’ Field, Sophia, he murdered Cort in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
He was not required to plead to the charge and the matter was adjourned until May 12. The teen will be remanded at the Sophia Juvenile Holding Centre.
The teen was arrested on March 12.
The police are still searching for a second suspect in the robbery, which was carried out on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Packet Corner, ‘C’ Field, Sophia, where Cort was visiting a friend at the time. Cort and his mother, Denise McPherson, were at the Lot 614 Packet Corner home of businesswoman Monette Famey when the two robbers, wearing face masks and armed with handguns, stormed in. Cort was shot when he exited a room in the upper flat.
Police said the two robbers relieved Famey, McPherson and another woman of cash and valuables amounting to over $500,000, before escorting them to the top flat of the home where Cort and Famey’s son were playing in a room. After hearing the commotion outside, the boy exited the room and was shot by one of the robbers.
When contacted yesterday afternoon, McPherson said that she is happy with the police for the progress made at such a fast rate. She mentioned that she did not attend court as she was only made aware of the court proceedings moments before she was contacted by this publication.
