Dear Editor,
Something is fundamentally wrong with the system – these forever never-ending election petitions in the courts. There must be finality to an election. An Electoral Commission must be so empowered and respected that when it delivers an election result it must be accepted by the vast majority of the population and all stakeholders. It is indeed comical – goes against the grain of a functional democracy – for a government to be sworn into office and simultaneously you have an election petition going through the motions in the courts seeking to annul the existence of that government. There are other serious issues in the society that explain the cause of these election petitions – and these issues must be addressed. Or else, every election for the next 50-years will be followed by an election petition.
Sincerely,
Mike Persaud
