A five-wicket haul from Kelvin Leitch ensured Police Sports Club an innings and 100-run win over the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) on the second day of the Georgetown Cricket Association/GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall first-division, two-day tournament yesterday.
The hosts Police with a lead of 132 resumed on 242 for six and batted an hour to reach 304 all out from 57.5 overs.
They then dismissed GNIC for 94 in 25.3 overs 30 minutes after lunch.
Kevlon Anderson and Quinten Sampson resumed their 174-run partnership but GNIC found success early on when Sampson slipped attempting a second run off the second ball of the day’s play and eventually was short of his ground. He did not add to his overnight score of 106.
Anderson, however, moved from his overnight score of 93 to bring up his century with a flick through the fine leg boundary. The former West Indies Under-19 batsman looking to up the scoring departed for 106 after being trapped leg before wicket to a half volley by Jermaine Benjamin in the third over of the day. He carved two sixes and six fours during his patient innings.
Ronsford Beaton, batting at 11, took the bowlers to the cleaners, hitting three sixes and one four before holing out to long on. He added 31 for the final wicket with Leitch who made 17. Dwain Dick ended with 4-75 while Benjamin bagged 2-36 for GNIC.
In GNIC’s second innings, the visitors failed to string together partnerships and slipped to 50 for five by lunch when skipper Dexter Solomon was bowled by Leitch for two.
Leitch returned after lunch to stifle the lower order, bowling Jeffrey Blair (12) and trapping Benjamin (13) leg before wicket to end with 5-25. Left-arm spinner, Anthony Adams picked up 2-21 while Beaton and Sampson picked up one wicket each.
