Two security guards who were employed at Kaieteur News were yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the murder of Mohabir Singh, who was discovered dead in the tray of a truck.

Tony Waldron and Yan Licorish appeared yesterday in a Georgetown court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read the charge to them.

They were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleges that between March 15, 2021, and March 16, 2021, at Kaieteur News, Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, they murdered 58-year-old, Singh.

According to information provided to the court by the Police Prosecutor, the two accused told investigators that Singh, also known as ‘Emile,’ tried to steal a car battery. The court heard that the two guards admitted to tying up the man with rope and scotch tape after which they dealt him several lashes. It was reported that after the beating, the two men threw Singh at the back of the canter tray, where his lifeless body was later discovered.

After listening to the prosecutor’s submissions, the magistrate remanded the men and adjourned the proceedings until April 19, 2021.

Stabroek News had reported that the 58-year-old man’s body was discovered by a company worker last Tuesday after which an investigation was launched. It was reported that the body was found in the tray of a truck which was parked on the premises of Kaieteur News, last Tuesday at around 9 am. Following the launch of the investigation, the two security guards were detained for questioning. They were on Friday charged by police with the murder of the man.

An autopsy found that Singh died as a result of brain haemorrhaging due to blunt trauma to the head.
