Guyana, Japan signal strengthening ties

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, earlier this month met virtually with Non-Resident Ambassador of Japan to Guyana, Tatsuo Hirayama, during which they express-ed interest in further strengthening relations between the two countries.

 According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, Todd briefed the Ambassador on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy and reiterated Guyana’s commitment to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) process for its resolution.  

For his part, the release said that the Japanese Ambassador expressed his support for a peaceful resolution of the border controversy through the ICJ process. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the enhancement of cooperation with Guyana at the bilateral and multilateral levels.

 Climate change and the need for disaster risk management were among the issues discussed.
