Two men who were on Monday charged with robbing a truck driver of his cellphone and other items have been remanded.
When they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts, Alvin Archer, 27, and Jermaine Grenville, 23, of Lot 344 Section ‘B’ Pattensen, Turkeyen, were charged with robbing the driver.
The charge states that on March 18, at Dowding Street, Kitty, Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, they stole a Samsung J2 Prime cellphone valued $30,000, a memory card valued $2,000, and a Digicel SIM card valued $2,000, the items totalling $34,000, from Terence Bouyeau, property of Terence Bouyeau.
After the charge was read to them by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, Grenville pleaded guilty with explanation while Archer denied the charge.
The police prosecutor told the court that Grenville has known the virtual complainant for the past four years but they are not on speaking terms. He said that Bouyeau is a truck driver who operates the Georgetown/Linden route. The court heard that on the day in question, Bouyeau had finished working and was heading home when he was approached by the suspects who relieved him of the items stated in the charge. The man suffered two stab wounds that were allegedly inflicted by Archer.
The complainant alerted a police patrol and they apprehended the suspects. The cellphone was found in Grenville’s possession. Archer was also with Grenville and hence was arrested at the same time.
The prosecutor also told the court that Archer was previously charged with a similar offence. Grenville told the court that he is a construction worker and that he is currently struggling to make ends meet for himself and his mother, who he lives with. He told the court that he is often hungry and further said that he followed the wrong company when he went through with committing the robbery.
The Magistrate then remanded both men and adjourned the matter until April 19.
