Guyana youth player, Matthew Nandu, has landed sponsorship from apparel giants, Adidas, while also securing a place at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada.

Nandu is currently studying online while training with the West Indies Under-19s where he is one of four locals in the provisional training squad.

The 17-year-old left-hander was also part of the Global T20 Canada league where he was recognised by ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle as one for the future.

The top-order batsman has so far built a reputation as a persistent batsman, exemplifying the fortitude similar to that of Guyanese batting icon, Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

Nandu, who also bowls a useful off-spin, said he was thankful for the sponsorship and will continue to work hard in order to represent the brand proudly. The sponsorship comes through Cricket Zone USA via its managing director, Ravi Etwaroo.

“It means a lot to receive a sponsorship from Cricket Zone USA with Adidas gear. It will motivate me to continue working hard, stay focussed and strive for my dreams. I especially want to thank Ravi from Cricket Zone USA and Adidas cricket…I will try to represent Cricket Zone USA and Adidas with the utmost professionalism. I will go out there every day and try to perform to the best of my ability,” The son of former first-class leg-spinner, Arjune Nandu told Stabroek Sport.

Nandu credited his family including Richard and Sonia Jodah and particularly his father, for being the driving force behind him, pointing out the sacrifices he has made so far as he aspires to represent West Indies at the highest level.

Nandu has been able to maintain an equally impressive academic track record which has afforded him acceptance at four universities.

Nandu explained that the decision to attend Wilfrid Laurier University came about because it not only offers the course he wants to pursue but is also closer to his home in Waterloo, Ontario.

In addition to Wilfred Laurier, he was also accepted in Waterloo University, Western University and Guelph University. Also, he has qualified to apply for a $40,000 scholarship for his academic achievement.

According to Nandu, he will be pursuing a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology before going on to teachers’ college.

“My goal in academics is to achieve an above 90 percent average in my courses. I will be attending university in September so it is mandatory to continue to stay focussed and work hard,” he said.
