Usual suspects, Emanuel Archibald, Devaughn Barrington, Attoya Harvey and Anfernee Headecker were among the standout performers when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) staged its third development meet of the season on Sunday at the National Track and Field Centre.
Archibald, a student of the University of West Indies at Mona, Jamaica sprinted to top honours in the Men’s 20+ 100 metres in 10.35s. He then took his talents to the pit and disturbed the sand at 7.83m to win the Men 20+ Long Jump event.
The national long jump record (8.12m) holder is still in the hunt to clinch an Olympic berth and is using local meets to sharpen his tools in an effort to qualify for the prestigious Games in Tokyo, Japan this summer.
The native of the Mining Town, will continue to jump in order to reach or surpass the entry standard of 8.22m to earn his spot in Japan before the qualifying window closes on June 21.
Elsewhere on the track, Archibald who was racing against the clock, recovered from a poor start to win the marquee 100m.
His timing was also not enough to punch his ticket to the Summer Games. Archibald has to run 10.05s to achieve the qualifying standard.
Barrington, who won the Men’s 400m at the last meet earlier this month, finished the Men’s 800m in 1m:57.19s. He led Headecker (1m:58.19s) and Nicholas Daw (1m:58.63s) onto the podium.
Headecker, however, took the spoils in the Men’s 1500m clocking a brisk 4m:07.84s leading Cleveland Thomas (4m:09.43s) and Ronell Newton (4m:13.66s) into the top three. Harvey recorded a double in the Girls 14-16 800m (2m:26.20s) and 1500m (4m:58.71s).
Other standout athletes on Sunday included: Shaquka Tyrell (Girls 17-19, 400m), Cassy Small (Women’s 16+ 100m), Wesley Tyndall (Boys 17-19, 100m), Omar James (Boys 14-16,400m), Mark Jhalu (Boys 16+ High Jump), Keliza Smith (Women’s 16+ 200m) and Anisha Gibbons (Women’s 16+ Shot Put).
According to the calendar of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), the next meet will be the National Senior Championships scheduled for April 17-18 at the same venue.
