Brothers Phillip and Fidel Williams will now have to face a retrial over the 2016 murder of Brazilian gold miner, Naldinho De Costa Souza, after a jury was unable to arrive at a verdict.
Following hours of deliberations, a jury at the High Court at Suddie yesterday afternoon was hung in a proportion of 10 to 2, indicating that they were deadlocked and unable to arrive at a consensus.
Justice Gino Persaud who presided over the case declared a mistrial and informed the brothers that they would have to remain on remand while awaiting a new trial.
The brothers are accused of murdering Souza on February 9, 2016 at Fish Creek, Cuyuni River.
The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Lisa Cave.
