The Golden Jaguars senior men’s team rebounded from their dismal performance in the opening Group-F match of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers by besting The Bahamas 4-0 yesterday at the Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The expected victory kept Guyana’s hopes alive of progressing to the next round. Guyana opted for the same starting XI which featured in the embarrassing 0-3 loss to Trinidad and Tobago last Thursday but switched from the 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-4-2 setup.
The starting XI was Akel Clarke, Matthew Briggs, Miguel Scarlett, Terrence Vancooten, Captain Sam Cox, Daniel Wilson, Callum Harriott, Trayon Bobb, Keanu Marsh-Brown and Emery Welshman.
The 196th ranked Bahamians, who went down by a 4-0 score to St Kitts and Nevis in their previous outing, fell behind in the seventh minute when defender Terrence Vancooten scored. It was the only conversion of the first half. However, the Guyanese recorded three unanswered goals in the second stanza to cap off the victory.
Daniels commenced the second half blitz getting onto the score sheet in the 54th minute. History was then created as Omari Glasgow became one of the youngest players to score at the senior level with a 74th minute conversion, five minutes after entering the field of play to replace Harriott.
Forward Welshman completed the result in the 84th minute. Pernell Schultz, Nathan Moriah-Welsh, Job Caesar and Nicolai Andrews also made substitute appearances in the 70th, 78th, 82nd and 82nd minute respectively.
Guyana will continue their Group ‘F’ campaign as they travel to St Kitts and Nevis for their June 4th clash. They will conclude the group round at home on June 8 against Puerto Rico. Only the group winner will progress to the second stage of the qualifiers.
