Newly elected president of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Bissoondyal Singh said yesterday that his focus will be on the nursery level of cricket locally.
Singh, along with a new panel of GCB executives, was elected Monday at the Parc Rayne Hotel under the watch of Cricket Ombudsman, Kamal Ramkarran, as set out by the Cricket Administration Act.
According to Singh, who spoke to Stabroek Sport exclusively on the sidelines at Parc Rayne, Rahaman’s Park after the election, a lot needs to be done swiftly, with schools cricket at the forefront.
“There’s almost everything we have to look at and it has to be done simultaneously and we have one of the problems like COVID-19 to deal with but as I said, the restructuring schools cricket, the inter-house cricket, the inter-schools programme, the inter-zone and the nursery,” Singh stated.
He added, “The focus is on the grassroots and to make sure we have a system in place for female cricket.
According to Singh, women’s cricket was mainly being played in Berbice.
“There is a total destruction of female cricket in Guyana. As you can see here, it’s only Berbice we have something going.”
Singh, who is also the President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB), said that he will address the issue from the county level.
“I have the monumental task at the Demerara Cricket Board which will be addressed very shortly so, for this period, our immediate thing is to have a transition as quickly as possible, smoothly that is.
“We are not looking for confrontation, we want to get it done as fast as possible and as I told my people when we were having consultation we are not taking positions to recognize ourselves personally but as a collective.”
Meanwhile, as it relates to selecting the national cricket teams, Singh revealed that the new body will look to have five-member selection panels.
He pointed out that there will be a chairman of selectors for each panel, a coach along with a selector from each county.
Former West Indies captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan heads the senior selection panel while former West Indies under-19 captain, Andre Percival heads the junior selection panel.
