The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is working to finalise a request made by the proprietor of Sleepin Hotel and Casino on Church Street, Clifton Bacchus, to utilise a section of the Merriman Mall for vehicular parking.
Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore, when contacted by this newspaper stated that the decision was influenced by what is happening in the area as it relates to the very congested traffic that affects the zone.
He noted that the impact on the churches and mosque nearby also contributed to the council considering the request.
Mentore stated that the council is vigorously pursuing measures to ease the traffic congestion and bring about some order in the area.
He noted that the matter was discussed and approved by the council, with councillors from both APNU and the PPP/C in agreement.
Mentore explained that what has guided the process so far has been influenced by what has been happening in the area, hence the reason why the council gave its blessing to the initiative. Councillors are all of the opinion that the request dovetails with the need to bring order to the area in general.
Mentore noted that while the lease request has been given a tentative green light, the matter is still a work in progress with additional details still to be hammered out.
